    Frequently Asked Questions:

What are the best canned tomatoes to use for vegan tomato soup?

The better the quality of tomatoes, the more your soup will taste like your favorite restaurant. Many times, the means using San Marzano tomatoes.

However, they are much more expensive that other canned tomatoes, so if you are on a budget, feel free to use whatever whole tomatoes you are able to find. You will still get a great soup.

    What if I don’t have a blender?

If you don’t have a blender, then you still have a few options. One is that you could eat the soup as is without making it smooth and creamy.

Another option would be to use an immersion blender which is usually much smaller and cheaper than blender.

Lastly, you could try doing very small batches in a food processor, still making sure not to overfill. Please note that it will not get as creamy and smooth with this method.

Can I prep this vegan tomato soup ahead of time?

Once made, let cool completely.  Then, you can store it in an air tight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Can I freeze this vegan tomato soup?

Yes! In addition to being able to store this soup in the fridge, you can put it into freezer safe bags or containers and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Let thaw out overnight or put in warm water to thaw before opening your bag or container.

Is this Vegan Tomato Soup Top 8 Allergen Friendly?

The only ingredients that you need to be mindful of for allergens are the vegan butter and coconut cream.

Use a soy free vegan butter if you need.

As far as the coconut cream, depending on your allergens you can use oat milk or cashew milk. Any plant based milk will work but try to stick with a creamier one.

Can I make this vegan tomato soup oil free?

While it will not have the richness that oil and vegan butter give, you can make this an oil free vegan tomato soup.

Saute your onions in vegetable stock instead of the oil and vegan butter and then proceed with making the recipe as directed.

Can you taste the coconut in the recipe?

We know that many people are sensitive to coconut flavors.

While we personally do not notice the taste at all and think you will love the recipe as is, if you have a strong aversion to coconut and can taste it in anything, we recommend choosing a different milk.

Is this vegan tomato soup spicy?

Because of the addition of red pepper flakes, it can be spicy. However you can omit entirely or you can reduce the amount being used.

Also, the longer red pepper flakes sit, the spicier it makes something overall. So you could choose to add at the end or to each individual bowl instead of adding when the recipe calls for other spices.

Can I make this vegan tomato basil soup?

Many times basil is added in addition to a delicious tomato soup. If you want to do this, you can add ½ cup roughly chopped fresh basil into the blender when you blend the soup.

We would not recommend using dried basil to make a tomato basil soup.

What can I serve with vegan tomato soup?

While we grew up with grilled cheese being served with tomato soup, and likely you did too, maybe you don’t have the ingredients or don’t feel like making one more thing.

Here’s a few more ideas that go well with vegan tomato soup:

    • croutons (make sure they are vegan!)
    • pretzels (hard pretzel or try or vegan soft pretzels)
    • vegan cheese crackers
    • tortilla strips or chips
    • pepitas
bowl of butternut squash soup with fresh thyme and a coconut drizzle

What other vegan soups should I try?

Soups are perfect warming, comfort foods. Warmth and filling meals is what we crave when it’s colder outside.

Naturally, we want more of those delicious recipes at out fingertips and we are happy to oblige those needs.

I made this soup and it was super yummy! All my roommates and I ate it all up and there were no leftovers. I didn’t tell them it was dairy free but it went un-noticed so bonus! I would highly recommend this recipe as it was super easy.

We did add some roasted garlic and two roasted bell peppers to it too and it just elevated the taste even more!

I used one can of crushed tomatoes and 1 can of fire roasted diced tomatoes, added some fresh rosemary and thyme. It was excellent. The next night we boiled some gnocci and used the soup as our sauce
