If you have even been to P.F. Chang’s then you likely had lettuce wraps. They are the signature appetizer and for some meal that is a must if you’ve ever been. However they are not vegan. But today, we are showing you how to make Copycat P.F. Chang’s Vegan Lettuce Wraps.

They did in recent years create a vegetarian version with tofu that is considered vegan friendly from our understanding.

However, if you want something more like the classic crumbles, then you will need to recreate your own.

Luckily, we’ve done all the guess work for you and we have a simple, yet absolutely delicious recipe for you!

Frequently Asked Questions:

What vegan “meat” are you using for this recipe?

P.F. Chang’s uses chicken in their lettuce wraps and we wanted to be close to that while still being vegan. Therefore, we went with the Trader Joe’s turkey burgers that we chopped up.

There are some vegan chicken crumble options but they are not readily available to most markets, so we thought this would be the easiest option.

What can I use if I don’t have a Trader Joe’s close?

While not quite the same, you can use any plant based ground meat in order to substitute for the turkeyless patties that we use from Trader Joe’s.

Is there a plant based substitute for these?

Whether you can’t find a “meat” substitute or you just prefer to avoid them, then we would recommend using something like jackfruit, mushrooms, mashed chickpeas or even TVP. There are plenty of options that would work well in this recipe.

Can I make Copycat P.F. Chang’s Vegan Lettuce Wraps Top 8 Allergen Free?

For the recipe as written, there is soy sauce and coconut sugar inside.

The coconut sugar, can just be replaced with brown sugar if you have a coconut allergy.

The soy sauce is the only other ingredient that we are concerned with. Depending on the allergies you have, you can replace the soy sauce with gluten-free tamaricoconut aminos or a Top 8 no soy sauce (click links to see each).

Can I prep these Copycat P.F. Chang’s Vegan Lettuce Wraps ahead of time?

Yes! The “meat” mixture can be made up to 5 days in advance.

We do not recommend that you put the mixture actually on the lettuce wraps until ready to make.

  • 1 tbsp + 1 tsp sesame oil, divided
  • ¼ cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoon soy sauce (sub for coconut aminos, tamari or no soy soy sauce)
  • 1 ½ tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon coconut sugar
  • 16 oz turkeyless patties (we used 4 Trader Joe's patties, see post for substitutions ideas)

  • 8 oz water chestnuts, drained and diced small
  • 2 green onions, sliced thin (more for garnish)

Optional Crispy Rice Noodles

Instructions

For Optional Crispy Rice Noodles

  • *If Making, make these first and sit aside.
Heat oil in a large skillet to 375 degrees F.
  • Cut noodles into 4-5 inch strips.
  • Once oil is hot, break noodles apart and drop into oil.
  • Fry for 30 seconds, careful not to brown. The noodles will puff up pretty quickly.
  • Remove to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  • Serve on top of the lettuce wraps.
  • Store any leftovers in an air tight container at room temperature.

For Lettuce Wraps

  • In a bowl, mix together 1 teaspoon sesame oil, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, garlic chili sauce, ginger, and sugar. Set aside.
Chop onions, garlic, and water chestnuts.
  • In a large sauce pan over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon sesame oil.
  • Add onions and cook until soft, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add garlic and patties. Cook 3-4 minutes (or according to package if using something different). While cooking, crumble the patties until they resemble fine crumbles.
  • Stir in chopped water chestnuts and cook for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add in green onions and sauce mixture. Cook another 1-2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, to taste if desired.
  • To serve, spoon several tablespoons of the mixture into the center of a lettuce leaf. Top with optional rice noodles is made. Serve with rice.

I tried this recipe because I am trying to eat less bread based lunches and I really enjoyed it. Never had anything like it before. Really good flavour and quick to make. I think next time I might make it for dinner and cook the tofu mix into rice.

    1. Thanks! Would love to hear what you’d do different to give it 5 stars?

This is a family favorite! We make it a few times a month. Satisfying crunch and excellent flavor. We are watching our sodium s we substitute Quorn in place of the “chickeless chicken” patties and it is delicious! Sometimes we do rice and mix it in as well! Just a great recipe!

These are now a family favorite., Vegan and carnivore alike!! I used premade chow mien noodles. These are completely addictive. I suggest a double or triple recipe. These are amazing cold too!

    1. So happy to hear everyone still enjoyed! Maybe we’ll have to recreate some French recipes 🙂

    Very flavourful!!❤️
I only have the square shape rice noodles on hand, but it still worked out just fine. Only difference was it puffed up in less than 3 seconds. I just crumbled the noodles after I fried them because the square ones were almost impossible for me to cut into strips.
    Thanks for this great recipe!😃
