This easy vegan sweet potato casserole is a perfect vegan side dish and not just for the holidays! An absolute must try!
Vegan sweet potato casserole is a hit around the holidays, but honestly it is great year round.
If you love mashed potatoes, then you will love a vegan sweet potato casserole. It is totally a southern dish that has been around forever, but today we are veganizing it.
If you have never had one, it is essentially mashed sweet potatoes with a few ingredients mixed in and then a crumble streusel topping. It is a much sweeter version of mashed potatoes.
It goes great with vegan roast for the holidays or you can serve it with vegan chicken, tofu, and so much more. Or if you are like us, then you can just have it on a plate, with a bunch of sides!
It can be completely top 8 allergen free!

Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I make Vegan Sweet Potato Casserole Top 8 Allergen Free?
Absolutely!
For starters, omit the pecans in the topping. Make sure to use a soy free vegan butter, we like Earth Balance soy free option. And then, swap the recommend coconut milk for any other dairy free milk! And this vegan sweet potato casserole will be just as delicious, but safe for you and your loved ones to eat! Enjoy.
Can I prep vegan sweet potato casserole ahead of time?
You sure can! You can make this recipe as directed, and then let cool completely. After it’s cooled, then cover and store in the fridge. Heat up when you are ready to serve. It is good for 5-7 days.
Do I have to use orange sweet potatoes or can I use white or purple?
Orange are the sweetest of the three colors of sweet potatoes; however, you can use any of the three for this recipe.
Two things to note though. You may want to taste the mixture and add a tad more brown sugar or maple syrup if using white or purple. Also, sometimes white or purple sweet potatoes are drier so you may need a splash or two more milk.
WHAT IS THE BEST DAIRY FREE MILK FOR VEGAN SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE?
When making this dish, we love the combination with canned coconut milk. It makes it so creamy and we don’t think the coconut flavor comes through enough for people who don’t like coconut.
Still, any unsweetened, unflavored dairy free milk will work. A creamier milk like oat milk or soy milk would be our first recommendation.
WHAT VEGAN BUTTER DO YOU RECOMMEND?
We have tried a few and honestly, there’s not much of a difference to be honest. Not like there is with dairy free milk.
We have a tendency to buy Earth Balance because that is what is most readily available to us; however, we’ve used Country Crock Plant Based Stick, Melt, and Flora Butter and had good results.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL THIS FEED?
This is one of those “it depends” questions. What else are you serving? Is this one of 10 side dishes to choose from or is this the only one? Ideally this is 8 servings, but you could make it stretch even further if you have a lot of side dishes like serving it for the holidays.
CAN I DOUBLE OR TRIPLE THIS VEGAN SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE?
Absolutely! You can easily double or triple this recipe as written depending on how many people you are serving at your dinner table or holiday get together. You will need a larger dish, like a 9×13 casserole dish depending on how much you are making you may need 2.
Can I replace the brown sugar with something healthier?
Yes. Our first recommendations would be that you could swap with coconut sugar, date sugar or maple syrup.
Other sugar sources will likely be able to swap as well, but we would try to stick with one of the three above.
Can I make this oil free vegan sweet potato casserole?
This dish does use a lot of vegan butter. However, we know that many people are oil free.
You could omit the vegan butter in the dish for more dairy free milk, until you are able to get a good mashed consistency.
As far as the vegan butter in the crumb topping, you can swap with maple syrup.
Obviously the taste will be much different, but if you are used to no oil in dishes, then you likely won’t mind.
