Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I make this vegan mango pina colada smoothie Top 8 Allergen Free?
Pina coladas are naturally made with coconut. That gives them their iconic taste. However, if you are allergic to coconut you could omit the shreds and replace the coconut milk with another dairy free alternative.
Obviously, it will have a much different taste since the coconut is very prominent in a smoothie like this. However, we still think you will love the combo of mango and pineapple.
I don’t have dates, can I use another sweetener?
Dates are used as a natural sweetener. It’s a great addition to smoothies since they are easily blended.
However, we know that sometimes dates are inaccessible or high in price for some people. If you need to swap the dates, we would recommend that you use maple syrup or agave.
Keep in mine that we are calling for an unsweetened dairy free milk in here, so if you use a sweetened version, then you may want to reduce the amount of sugar.
Can I add other fruit to this smoothie?
Absolutely. Smoothies are all about playing around with ingredients. The base of this is the pineapple and coconut to give it that pina colada flavor; however, beyond that you can get inspired by whatever else you have in your fridge or freezer. Strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries would be some good additions.
Should I use fresh or frozen fruit?
This is completely up to you. We prefer to use frozen fruit for two reasons.
- Frozen fruit naturally makes your smoothie cold without having to add ice.
- Adding ice waters the flavors down so we prefer not to use that.
Are you using canned or carton coconut milk?
We recommend using carton coconut milk in this recipe to reduce the overall calories and to have the hint of coconut. However, if you need a higher calorie smoothie for any number or reasons or you want more of a coconut taste, then we would recommend using canned coconut milk.
What brand of sea moss are you adding to this smoothie?
We are using Herbal Vineyards. A preservative free sea moss made from the waters of St. Lucia. Their sea moss gel only contains sea moss and natural spring water. You can learn more about Herbal Vineyards, including other ways to use sea moss in our detailed post here.
Why should I add sea moss to my smoothies?
We are not medical professionals, so always contact your health care provider before adding any supplements to your diet. That being said, sea moss contains 92 or the 102 minerals in the human body. Adding to to smoothies is a great way to consume it without it overpowering anything else that you are eating.
By adding ingredients like coconut, pineapple and mango you can mask that taste that you get.
Herbal Vineyards has less of a sea taste than many of the other sea moss brands that we have tried in the past, but there’s still a taste there and this smoothie helps be able to actually enjoy consuming both the smoothie and the sea moss.
Can I still make this smoothie even if I don’t have sea moss?
Absolutely! Feel free to make this anytime. Whether you have sea moss or even some of the other ingredients you can still have a great smoothie with this combination of foods.
Can I prep this smoothie ahead of time?
Yes! You can either add all the ingredients (pre blended) into a freezer safe container and put that into the freezer until ready to use. Or you can make the smoothie completely, add it to a freezer safe container and then just thaw out when ready to consume.
You should try to use the ingredients within 3 months no matter which option you choose.

Loved this tropical vibe! I replaced the sea moss gel with spirulina powder for some fun colour and a tint of sea-y-ness!!
