We tried Purple Carrot, the plant based meal delivery service! See our Purple Carrot Review and Taste Test Video Review!
Believe it or not, we’ve never personally tried a meal delivery service. You’d think that we’d want to since we cook so much and maybe would welcome the break. But no. So this Purple Carrot Review is our first meal box delivery service review.
That being said, we welcomed the idea of not having to plan some of our meals and really see if the hype surrounding having your meals delivered straight to your door is actually worth the hype.
Let’s break it all down.

What is Purple Carrot?
Purple Carrot is a subscription meal box delivery service that started in 2014. They deliver vegan meals to your door weekly. While it is subscription based, there are no feeds to join and you can cancel whenever you want. Additionally you could skip weeks if you don’t want a delivery without any penalty.
You can choose between 2 and 4 servings and the price is determined on how many meals and servings you choose per week. You can now also choose to add breakfasts, lunches, or snacks to your subscription box each week.
How many servings can I choose with Purple Carrot?
Purple Carrot allows you to select either 2 servings per meal or 4 servings per meal. Making it great for couples, singles that want leftovers, or a family of 4.
If you select the 2 servings, you will have 8 dinner options to choose from each week. If you select the 4 servings, you will have 4 dinner options to choose from each week.
The 2 serving plan can be selected in either 2 or 3 meal plans and the 4 serving plan can be selected in either 3 or 4 meal plans as the base package.
You can add on more meals if you wish beyond the base.
How much does Purple Carrot meal box service cost?
The cost is dependent on the servings that you choose. If you choose 2 servings, it is $11.99 per serving. If you choose 4 servings, it comes down to $9.99 per serving.
How much does Purple Carrot charge for shipping?
Shipping with Purple Carrot is free. The shipping cost is included in the cost of the serving price that we discuss above. There are no additional costs beyond what you see for the serving size unless you decide to add on additional meals or snacks.
Can I choose my meals?
Yes! In fact, that’s what we did, only keeping one of the original suggestions given to us. Purple Carrot does make suggestions for meals; however, you can go in to change them at any point up until the order deadline for the week.
If you do not make any changes, you will be shipped their suggested meals. You are able to see meals up to 4 weeks in advance and change them for each week as desired.
Can Purple Carrot meals be Top 8 Allergen Free?
Yes! You can see the full recipe before selecting the meals and they list the Top Allergens. You can remove those meals and choose ones that work for your family based on your family’s needs.
Can I choose my delivery date?
No you cannot. Purple Carrot assigns you a delivery date. From our understanding, it’s based on where you live in relation to their distribution warehouses.
How does the box and the meals come?
Everything that you order comes in a cardboard box with a large, oversized ice pack at the bottom. Each meal is wrapped and labeled individually.
As you can see in the photo above, each meal has the name on the package and it’s sealed shut. This really made it easy to just grab and go when we were ready to make that particular meal.
The only thing that was not individually wrapped was the garlic and that was because a small amount was needed for each recipe.
How long does it take to make each dish?
After looking through the meals that we could have ordered and the ones that we did order, most of the meals take 30-40 minutes.
One of the dishes that we made, the Lemon Braised Chickpeas, was supposed to take 40 minutes and it ended up taking up 50 minutes because the potatoes were not fork tender when it said the dish should have been done.
Otherwise, the meals took exactly how long the recipe said it should take.
Is there any food that is not included in the box that I would need?
The only food that was not included in our box that we needed to add according to the recipe was oil, salt, and pepper. All things that should be staples in most homes.
What meals did we choose?
The three meals that we selected were:
- General Tso’s Tofu
- Lemon Braised Chickpeas
- Indian Butter Tofu
Overall Thoughts
We really loved these meals. The Indian Butter Tofu lacked flavor, but the other two didn’t and we really liked.
What was remaining? Was there waste?
There was a lot of plastic as to be expected with most subscription box meal delivery services that we’ve been told. Beyond that, the cardboard box that it was shipped in can be recycled.
As far as what was left, we had a package of soy sauce, a few cloves of garlic and about an ounce of ginger left. That was it. All the other ingredients were used completely which was great.
