Meati Foods Carne Asada Steaks

Thoughts: This is one of those products that if you don’t like how close vegan products can come to meat, it would confuse you.

The texture is so good and the flavor is really there too. The look of it after cooking doesn’t give a great appearance, but if you added something like chimichurri over it or steak sauce you’d be good!

Ingredients: Meati Steak (Mushroom Root [mycelium], Less Than 2% Of: Salt, Natural Flavor, Fruit Juice for Color, Oat Fiber, Vegetable Juice for Color, Lycopene for Color), Seasoning Blend (Dehydrated Garlic, Salt, Sugar, Spices, Paprika, Dehydrated Onion, Cilantro, Olive Oil, Natural Flavors, Extractives of Paprika).

Allergens: No top allergens.

Meati Foods Crispy Cutlets

Thoughts: This was probably the most realistic out of the three to a meat based product. It’s perfectly breaded. Has a great inside texture and a great balance of the crispiness on the outside.

Andrew did agree with Larisha when she said this more so reminded her of a fish sandwich from McDonalds that she had prior to being a vegan and maybe the company should rebrand it as that.

Ingredients: Meati Cutlet (Mushroom Root [mycelium], Less Than 2% Of: Salt, Acacia Gum, Natural Flavor, Chickpea Flour, Oat Fiber), Breading (Rice Flour, Canola Oil, Yellow Corn Flour, Potato Protein, Salt, Leavening [Baking Soda, Disodium Diphosphate, Calcium Phosphate], Spice, Dried Garlic, Dried Onion, Paprika, Paprika Extract, Xanthan Gum).

Allergens: No Top 9 Allergens.

Meati Foods Classic Cutlets

Thoughts: This was also good and reminiscent of a plain chicken breast. Very surprised at the texture.

This one you do season yourself (per the instructions) and we went with a multiblend herb seasoning.

Ingredients: Mushroom Root (mycelium), Less Than 2% Of: Salt, Natural Flavor, Acacia Gum, Oat Fiber, Chickpea Flour.

Allergens: No Top 9 Allergens.

Overall Thoughts

There’s a few things that we want to call out.

  • We really enjoyed these. The overall flavor profile of each is well balanced.
  • Even if you don’t like mushrooms, you’d be very surprised by these. Andrew is a devout anti-mushroom vegan and he enjoyed these.
  • These are high in protein (15-17g depending on the product), so it’s a great option if you are looking for that without soy or wheat.
  • The size of these is great and on par with non-vegan options.

  1. I thoroughly enjoy when you guys review new products – it’s just incredibly helpful and I especially like watching your faces when you take the first bites lol! So I did try this for dinner tonight. I had the classic cutlets and I made chikn piccata with them. I ended up slicing each piece in half in order for it to be more of a cutlet style. It was very hard to slice from the refrigerator so next time I would probably try to do it when it’s slightly frozen. Anyway, I thought it was delicious and I really enjoyed it and the only reason I tried it was after looking at your review. So I hope this is helpful for other viewers!

  2. Thanks for the review!
I tried the cutlet last night for the first time, and was very pleasantly surprised. I actually re-checked the box to make sure there was no FISH in it! These could be used to make vegan crab cakes 🙂 I am impressed with the clean ingredient list and high protein content. Paid about $8 in San Diego. Will definitely purchase again.

  3. Hi you guys! thanks for information on Meati and Beyond Chicken products! glad that your overall critique was favorable for both. I will definitely try as my husband likes a chicken sandwich once in awhile. My only concern would be the sodium amount at 600mg on the meati packaging! Yikes! As a retired senior I try and monitor our odium intake. Otherwise love your recipes, I have made the carrot cake which was a big hit and the saucy thai noodles. Tonight I am making an Asian stir fry. Andrew you are so organized and I so enjoy your methodical approach in your prepping and I need to follow your lead on that in the kitchen. LOL Sometimes I can be a wee bit messy, but I always here my mom’s loving voice, “Trinka, it is better to clean up as you go along”. I appreciate your culinary expertise and look forward to making more of your amazing recipes!! love you guys, be well.

    Trinka 🙂

  4. Just bought the carne asada because it was on clearance and I ran back for more. I cooked the steak on the grill and ate it with a little A1 Sauce. Delish!! Texture is almost identical to meat steak. I now want to make tacos out of it!!

  5. Came across these by chance at my local health food market. Got the crispy cutlets. And like. Wow. I don’t think I’ve had any other plant-meat product with quite this same texture, it’s pretty incredible. It’s just the right amount of crispy and juicy, and there’s a sort of chew to it that I haven’t ever had in a vegan product. It somehow very specifically reminds me of fried white-meat chicken, like the kind my family often would get from our local grocery’s deli for quick dinners when I was a kid. Granted, I don’t even know when the last time I ate that was, cuz it was probably quite some time even before I went vegan, but it at least fits my MEMORY of it from childhood. My mom, who isn’t vegan and doesn’t always like all plant-meats, tried a piece and said she thought my memory was pretty spot on though, and she did also like it, though at this price point wouldn’t likely purchase it for herself as a non-vegan. I’m very curious about the carne asada option now, since the texture of this one definitely gives chicken rather than steak. If they can somehow get this one protein to take on multiple textures that’d be pretty neat.

  6. I’ve been following the Meati development for some time.
Your review was well done and very balanced. The video was delightful.
Right after reading this was notified that Whole Foods started stocking these. A quick (1.5 hour each way) trio to WF netted us with three varieties of Meati (skipped the breaded one, not a fan of breaded stuff, except of course actual bread) 🙂
Tried the first one, Carna Asada, and have to agree with you – really good flavor and texture. The non vegan loved it as well, saying that while it would not fool anyone into thinking they were eating meat, it had a good mouth feel and tasted great. High praise indeed.

Thanks for sharing your kind thoughts on Meati and keep up the wonderful work you do with this site.
