First, let’s get formalities out of the way.  Whether you call this vegan monkey bread or vegan pull apart bread, it’s totally the same recipe.

Also, let’s talk about what it is for those of you who may not know.

Vegan monkey bread is essentially a mini form of a cinnamon roll where the cinnamon mixture is on the outside of the dough instead of in the inside. It’s then all piled high in a bread pan and baked.

Once done, you can then pull each individual piece off instead of having to unroll or cut through a cinnamon roll.

Kids love the bite size pieces and adults love it too because small things are fun.

It’s all then topped with a delicious vegan glaze that’s just incredible.

What ingredients do I need for vegan monkey bread?

You only need 11 ingredients for these easy dairy free monkey bread.

We start with the base of our vegan everything dough recipe and then just add a few extra ingredients to make the monkey bread.

The ingredients that you need are:

  • Flour
  • Instant yeast
  • Salt
  • Dairy Free Milk (we like Oat)
  • Maple Syrup
  • Vegan Butter
  • Vegan Sugar
  • Coconut Sugar (can sub brown sugar)
  • Cinnamon
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Vanilla

That’s it! Can you believe that’s all you need?

How do you make Vegan Monkey Bread?

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, yeast, and salt.  Then, add in the dairy free milk and maple syrup.

Using a spatula, fold until mostly combined.  Sprinkle a little more flour if you need to not be sticky and form a ball.

Once your ball is formed, you will want to grease the same bowl you mixed in and place the dough ball back into the bowl.

Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let sit for 60-90 minutes in a warm, draft free place.

Once doubled in size, pull out the dough and lay it out on a lightly floured surface.

Melt the butter in one dish.  In another bowl, add the coconut and cane sugar and cinnamon and combine together.

Grease a bread pan and set aside.

Pull off equal size pieces of dough – 1 to 2 tablespoon size depending on how big you want pieces to be (just pull, there’s no wrong answer here). Roll into balls.

Dip each piece in the butter, then the cinnamon sugar mixture and place in the bread pan.

Repeat with all dough balls, piling them on top of each other.  If any leftover butter, pour across the top.

Cover pan. Heat oven to 150 degrees, turn off and place covered dish inside to rise for 30-45 minutes. It should be peeking a little over the top of the pan.

Remove from oven and let oven preheat to 350 degrees F. Bake in oven for 25-30 minutes.

While baking, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla and dairy free milk a tablespoon at a time until desired consistency.

Remove from oven and top with homemade vegan glaze.  Serve warm.

Can I make this in a bundt pan?

You may have seen recipe for monkey bread before in a bundt pan.  Or maybe even before being dairy free or vegan you had a recipe you made.  This recipe can be made in a bundt pan if double. Just make two batches of dough and proceed through the recipe.  It will need a longer baking time.

Can I prep this vegan monkey bread recipe ahead?

Yes!  You sure can!  There are two options.

  1. Once you make the dough and cover it to rise, you can place the bowl in the fridge up to 2 days before you plan to use it.
  2. You can make the entire recipe and then store your monkey bread in an air tight container in the fridge for 5 days.

Is this vegan monkey bread Top 8 Allergen Free?

Unfortunately, at the time, we cannot recommend using a gluten free flour with this recipe.  Please know that we are working on a gluten free dough, but it’s just not quite there yet.

Otherwise, make sure you sub brown sugar for coconut sugar and as long as you use a safe dairy free milk, (like we said Oat is our favorite) then you will be all set.

Could I make other things with the dough besides monkey bread?

Yes!  This recipe using our vegan everything dough that can be used for cinnamon rolls, pull apart bread and more!  Grab our vegan everything dough recipe by clicking that link and you’ll get a ton more ideas!

  1. Okay, I’m gonna need this in Captain Dummy Speak. 1 packet of instant yeast – I’m assuming 1/4 oz. packet and here’s where I need clarification – Quick Rise or Active Dry?

    Thanks!

    1. Quick Rise is what we use. If you use Active Dry it will just take longer to rise. 1 packet = 2 1/4 tsp

  2. Hi … once you remove from 150 w/ covered pan.. do you put the pan back w/ cover at 350 or remove cover and bake ?
    Thanks 🙏🏼
