How do I make vegan hamburger buns?
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, yeast, vegan sugar and salt. Then, add in the water.
Using a spatula, fold until mostly combined. Sprinkle a little more flour if you need to not be sticky and form a ball.
Once your ball is formed, you will want to grease the same bowl you mixed in and place the dough ball back into the bowl.
Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let sit for 60-90 minutes in a warm, draft free place.
Once doubled, roll out onto a lightly floured surface.
Cut dough into 8 equal pieces. *We prefer to weigh the pieces on a scale so they are even.
Grab a piece and fold the ends under shaping into a ball. Then roll the dough into a ball with your hands.
Place on a baking sheet and repeat with remaining pieces.
Cover with a damp towel. (not soaking wet but damp)
Let sit for 60-90 minutes in a warm, draft free place or until doubled in size again.
Remove towel and brush with vegan butter.
Bake at 375 degrees for 25-35 minutes.
Remove from oven and brush with more vegan butter.
Slice in half and use however you would want buns.
I’m oil free, Do I have to use vegan butter?
If you are oil free, you do not have to use vegan butter. However, the buns will be lighter in color and not as flakey on the top.
We would recommend that you brush lightly with plant based milk.
Can I make vegan hamburger buns Top 8 Allergen Free?
Unfortunately, at the time, we cannot recommend using a gluten free flour with this recipe. Please know that we are working on a gluten free dough, but it’s just not quite there yet.
For the vegan butter, we recommend Earth Balance Soy Free, it comes in a red tub.
How long are vegan hamburger buns good for?
These will last for 4-5 days if stored properly in an air tight container. After that you run the risk of mold and they will not be as soft. Warm before using.
Can vegan hamburger buns be frozen?
Yes. You could place these in an air tight container or freezer bag for up to 2 months. Remove from the freezer and let thaw out overnight.

Can I make this with Active Dry Yeast?
LarishaBernard
Yes! It may just take a bit longer to rise. Make sure that it’s rising as stated and not just looking at the time

These turned out awesome. I’m not a particularly confident baker, and previous bun recipes I’ve tried were either too dense or became so after cooling. These stayed fluffy. They got a little flat, but I prefer a larger surface area for my fillings. You guys rock.

So glad that you enjoyed them! Thanks for taking time to leave a review, we appreciate it

I have been looking for a straightforward vegan bun recipe for ages and this one is perfect. Nailed it on the first try. I love how simple it is. I’ve been making burgers almost every week since our first lockdown (one year ago!!!) and this is the first bun recipe that works for me. Thank you!

We’re so happy to hear that! Thanks for leaving a review!

These were easy to make and delicious! Mine did fall a bit flat but it could just be not enough proofing. But they baked beautifully in 20 minutes.

Glad to hear you enjoyed! Thanks for the feedback

Made these this morning and they turned out great! I have never made buns (or bread) from scratch before. I will make these all the time now instead of buying bread at the store. I used half AP flour and half whole wheat. Delicious! Thank you.
LarishaBernard
So happy to hear you loved the recipe. Thanks so much for taking time to leave a review, we appreciate that a lot. Have a great week!
Jane
The cook time was also way too long. 15 minutes at that cook time was more than enough.
The buns also flattened out like the other commentor’s.
Jane
This dough was WAY too wet. I had to use about 6 cups of flour to balance the ratios out 🙁
LarishaBernard
Hi Jane. If you’d like to troubleshoot we’d be happy to have you email us. We’ve made this recipe so many times successfully as have other people. This uses our vegan everything dough recipe that uses the same amount of liquid, however there are many factors that we could trobuleshoot.
Nelly
Made this twice now, with all purpose flour and its been perfect both times. Thank you.

Hi guys,
I made these and they were great. On my thing was they rose and became a bit flat/wide and a bit browned (think my heat in fan oven was a bit high). Tasted amazing. Thanks for the recipe.
