We have been asked so many times what is the best vegan protein powder and today we can finally say that we have one. Or maybe it’s two.

Today we’re comparing vanilla vegan protein powders! In this vegan protein powder review and taste test, we grabbed 6 of the most popular vegan protein powder brands and put them to a side by side test.

The way we got these top 6 brands was to do a poll on our Instagram stories. We took the most popular answers from that poll and picked the top 6. There were more answers that these 6, but we thought for our health, we shouldn’t try more than that at one time!

That just means that we will have to do an additional vegan protein powder review.

We compared these for both taste and what we remember them tasting like before.

PSA:

We know that everyone has different taste buds.  What we may think is the best, may completely vary from what you actually like.

You may ultimately think our best is the worst and that’s okay.  We created this video as hopefully a starting point for people and we can only go off our opinion.

What vegan protein powder brands did we try?

The brands that we tried for this video are:

  • Vega
  • Orgain
  • Sunwarrior
  • KOS
  • Truvani
  • Nuzest

We only remember trying one of these brands before. However, we had never tried any of them side by side with other brands which we believe is really important when it comes to taste testing.

How did we do the vegan protein powder taste test?

For each of the vegan protein powders, we mixed with the same unsweetened almond milk. We wanted something consistent, but also neutral in flavor. We made half the amount of the recommended serving since we were trying so many and we didn’t want to waste a lot. Then compared for taste and texture.

What are the vegan protein powder brands?

Sunwarrior vanilla protein powder package.

Sunwarrior Protein Warrior Blend Review

Thoughts: Immediately we were a little confused on the servings for this one. There is a range and not a clear indication on when you go with a lower or higher amount. As someone who consumes protein regularly, we don’t think this is a dealbreaker, but could be very confusing for people that are just beginning to use protein powders.

This one was a bit cakey in texture. The taste was also off. Larisha compared this to eating stale chalk and Andrew said it was fermented old peas. Either way, we were not a fan of these.

Allergens: Coconut.

Ingredients: Proprietary Protein Blend (Organic Fermented Pea Protein, Organic Goji Berry, Organic Hemp Seed Protein), Organic Vanilla Flavor, Organic Guar Gum, Organic Medium-Chain Triglycerides Oil (Coconut Oil, Acacia Gum), Sea Salt, Organic Stevia Leaf Extract (Steviol Glycosides).

Clean lean protein vanilla protein powder package.

Nuzest Clean Lean Protein Review

Thoughts: It’s a thicker one over all. It had an amazing taste in the packaging, but that smell doesn’t transfer ones blended with non-dairy milk. It wasn’t our favorite, but it’s not bad overall.

Allergens: None listed.

Ingredients: Pea protein isolate, natural vanilla flavor, thaumatin.

Price: $42.70

Where to Buy: Purchase on Amazon

KOS organic vanilla plant protein powder package.

KOS Organic Plant Protein Review

Thoughts: Immediately we were a little confused on the servings for this one also. There is a range and not a clear indication on when you go with a lower or higher amount. As someone who consumes protein regularly, we don’t think this is a dealbreaker, but could be very confusing for people that are just beginning to use protein powders.

There was a weird film on this at the top of this one. When stirred together it would go away, but if left to sit for a minute or two it came back. It was just a turnoff to see since no other ones did this.

The smell of this one wasn’t great. It was also grainy. We did the lower amount of protein and non-dairy milk, but think that we should have added more milk, which is again where the confusion comes into play on serving suggestion. It had an overpowering vanilla flavor.

Allergens: Coconut

Ingredients:  Organic Pea Protein, Organic Flax Seed, Organic Quinoa, Organic Pumpkin Seed Protein, Organic Chia Seed. Digestive Enzyme Blend: Amylase, Protease, Lipase, Lactase, Cellulase. Other Ingredients: Organic Coconut Milk, Organic Inulin, Organic Coconut Sugar, Organic Acacia Gum, Organic Vanilla Flavor, Organic Stevia, Natural Plant-Based Fruit and Vegetable Blend (Tomato, Broccoli, Carrot, Shiitake Mushroom, Cranberry, Apple, Orange), Himalayan Salt, Natural Monk Fruit Extract Flavor.

Truvani plant based vanilla protein powder package.

Truvani Organic Plant Based Protein Review

Thoughts: This is very thick and there is a very earthy taste to it. Overall we were not a fan of this one on taste and texture alone. We do understand that there is an appeal to this one due to it being limited ingredients.

Allergens: None listed.

Ingredients: Organic Pea Protein Concentrate, Organic Vanilla Powder, Organic Pumpkin Seed Concentrate, organic Monk Fruit Extract, Organic Chia Seed Protein Concentrate.

Price: $44.99

Where to Buy: Purchase on Amazon

Vega plant based vanilla protein powder package.

Vega Protein & Greens Review

Thoughts: We had this one in our house prior to this taste test, so we knew we liked it. We usually put it in smoothies, so we don’t notice the color when mixed in just non-dairy milk, but it does have a very green color when mixed in just milk. It was the only one that was not a beige color. It has a nice vanilla taste and isn’t chalky like we remember a lot of other protein powders being. Andrew did say that he thinks there should still be room for improvement.

Protein: 20g per serving

Allergens: None listed.

Ingredients: Vega Protein Blend (Pea Protein, Vega Saviseed [Sacha Inchi] Protein, Hemp Seed Protein, Sprouted Whole Grain Brown Rice Protein), Natural French Vanilla Flavors, Vega Green Blend (Organic Alfalfa Grass Powder, Spinach Powder, Broccoli Powder, Organic Kale Powder), Papaya Concentrate Powder (Contains Naturally Occurring Enzymes), Stevia Leaf Extract, Xanthan Gum

Price: $23.99 per package

Where to Buy: Purchase on Amazon

Orgain plant based vanilla protein powder package.

Orgain Organic Protein Review

Thoughts: While this says vanilla, it definitely tastes like cinnamon oatmeal flavor. We did also like the taste of this one. There wasn’t a big chalky flavor. We also liked that it had so many superfoods in it. We did think this one had a better taste and less chalkiness than the Vega, but because it doesn’t taste like vanilla, and we were trying to compare vanilla, it was second for us.

Protein: 21g per serving

Allergens: Sesame.

Ingredients: Orgain Organic Protein Blend (Pea Protein*, Brown Rice Protein*, Chia Seed*), Orgain Organic Creamer Base (Acacia*, High Oleic Sunflower Oil*, Rice Dextrin*, Sunflower Lecithin*, Rosemary Extract*), Erythritol*, Natural Flavors*, Orgain Organic 50 Superfoods Blend [Millet*, Amaranth*, Buckwheat*, Quinoa*, Chia*, Kale Powder*, Apple Pulp*, Cinnamon*, Organic Sprouts Blend (Amaranth Sprout*, Quinoa Sprout*, Millet Sprout*, Buckwheat Sprout*, Garbanzo Bean Sprout*, Lentil Sprout*, Adzuki Sprout*, Flax Sprout*, Sunflower Sprout*, Pumpkin Sprout*, Chia Sprout*, Sesame Sprout*), Organic Super Veggies, Super Berries, Super Grasses & Super Foods Blend (Acai*, Cranberry*, Wheat Grass*, Barley Grass*, Oat Grass*, Banana*, Mango*, Beet*, Carrot*, Spinach*, Broccoli*, Tomato*, Kale*, Cabbage*, Parsley Leaf*, Brussels Sprout*, Green Bell Pepper*, Cucumber*, Celery*, Garlic*, Ginger Root*, Green Onion*, Cauliflower*, Asparagus*, Pineapple*, Turmeric*, Strawberry*, Tart Cherry*, Blackberry*, Blueberry*, Raspberry*)], Acacia*, Reb A (Stevia Extract)*, Sea Salt, Guar Gum*, Xanthan Gum, Natural Flavor, Organic Food Based Vitamin C (Amla Fruit Extract*), Organic Food Based B Vitamin Blend (Guava* , Holy Basil*, Lemon Extract*). *Certified Organic Ingredients

Who was the winner?

All that above, just to get here and see who the winner is!

We had a very clear top 3 vegan protein powders.

To us the best vegan vanilla protein powder is Vega Protein & Greens.

Followed up closely by Orgain Organic Protein Powder. We actually liked the Orgain better overall, but the vanilla wasn’t there and so that’s why Vega won out since we were comparing vanillas.

Nuzest Clean Lean Protein Powder was our 3rd favorite favorite overall.

We debated on the 4th and 5th positions, Larisha thinking it should be KOS, then Truvani, but Andrew said he would swap this order.

We both agreed that out of these 6, Sunwarrior would have been our least favorite.

Do you agree with us?  Have you tried any of these ? Tell us below!

  1. I purchased the Form protein powder based on the Vegan Gym channel and it did not disappoint. I highly recommend trying theirs. I think (I could be wrong) all their products are vegan.

  2. Have you tried any of the Bob’s Red Mill protein powders? I’ve been meaning to give those a shot as the ingredient lists are super simple.

  3. I’ve used Vega P&G for years – I love that they have added greens – my only complaint is that I’ve had to mix any of their flavored powders with half unflavored unsweetened as they are so INSANELY sweet to me.

I’ve just discovered Truvani – and although there are no added greens (I can add them in myself) I do prefer that the flavors are more natural tasting and although still sweet no where near as sickly sweet as the Vega.

  4. Great taste test. It’s so hard to find a good protein powder as
most don’t offer samples before you buy a huge tub only to
have it taste nasty! I have two brands to suggest you try on
your next taste test. I really like Sprouts brand. My local Sprouts
carried vanilla, salted caramel and matcha tea. Also, I recently
purchased 3 different flavors, including vanilla, from the vegan wondershake line of The Protein Works. The company is based on the UK so you would had to order online but the shipping is fast and free iud you order over a certain amount. Anyway, if you did another taste test, those would be great contenders!

  5. I also use and love the Vega vanilla protein powder. I’ve tried lots of protein powders and have been disappointed with the chalky flavor. One thing that I really like about the Vega is that they have a stevia free version. I do not like fake sweeteners. No mater what they say they are still extracted with chemicals and I do not like the taste they bring. Vega has a version that is sweetened with organic cane sugar and I really like that. My husband likes the Orgain organic protein powder in vanilla so I think your picks are spot on. Thank you
