A plant based egg option that scrambles just like egg.  Dive deep into this Just Egg Review to see the pros and cons!

Whether you are plant based/vegan or have egg allergies, you may wish that you had an egg option for breakfast. Often times when someone has a dairy allergy, an egg allergy is present as well. Or if a person is plant based, then they consume neither dairy or eggs.  It’s for that reason that we wanted to dive into this Just Egg Review.

Just Egg is a brand new product from the company Just. Some may be familiar with their Just Mayo or Just Ranch or Just Cookie Dough products.  All of their products are dairy and egg free.

Watch our Just Egg Review:

What is Just Egg?

For those of you who are not familiar with the company or product, no, it’s not “just eggs” in the literal sense.  Just Egg is a product that is completely plant based, so that means no animals were harmed in any way when making this product.

Just Egg says that the product will scramble like traditional poultry eggs, all while being cholesterol-free, non-GMO, and tasty.  It currently comes in one size – a 12oz bottle. Just Egg is a liquid in the bottle, and then turns into a fluffy breakfast protein resembling scrambled eggs out of mung beans.

Is Just Egg vegan?

The label on the Just Egg product does not specifically state Vegan.  However, it does say that it is plant based. In addition to saying that it is plant based, the Just Egg product does say that it is non-GMO.

What is Just Egg made off?

You may be wondering for this Just Egg review, just what in the world are the Just Egg ingredients. There are a total of 16 different ingredients inside of one Just Egg bottle.  Those ingredients are:

  • Water
  • Mung Bean Protein Isolate
  • Expeller-Pressed Canola Oil
  • Calcium Citrate
  • Enzyme
  • Gellan Gum
  • Natural Carrot Extractives (color)
  • Natural Turmeric Extractives (color)
  • Onion Puree
  • Natural flavors
  • Salt
  • Soy Lecithin
  • Sugar
  • Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate
  • Preservatives – Nisin and Potassium Sorbate

Those are the ingredients that are packed into every single bottle of Just Egg.

Are Just Eggs healthy?

Of course, you want us to tell you if this going to be healthy for you! Just Egg is comprised of (1) 12 oz bottle, every time that you purchase it.  Inside each bottle it says that there are 8 servings and that a serving size is 3 tablespoons.

Each serving of the Just Egg brand has:

  • 45 calories
  • 20g calories from fat
  • 0mg Cholesterol
  • 150mg Sodium
  • 0g carbohydrate
  • 5g protein
  • 2% Daily Value of Calcium and 4% of Iron

Is Just Egg gluten free?

You’ve heard me mention about the Just Egg being dairy and egg free, but if you are like so many other people, then you’d also love to know if Just Egg is gluten free.  When someone is gluten free that means they have to pay special attention to the product.  Similar to how dairy free and other allergy families live.  Thankfully, besides soy, there are no other Top 8 Allergens inside of the product, including no gluten.

So, yes, Just Egg is gluten free.

Where to buy Just Egg?

Finding Just Egg (as you saw in our video if you happened to watch it) is still proving to be difficult, at the time of this Just Egg Review. So unfortunately, you can’t find Just Egg in every single store that you may be visiting.

The places that you can find Just Egg are:

  • Wegmans
  • Lucky
  • HyVee
  • Veggiegrill
  • New Seasons Market
  • Fresh & Thyme
  • BiRite
  • Nugget Markets

So far, for us, Wegmans, is all that carries it locally.  Just Egg does plan to expand nationwide to a variety of stores, as well as be able to stock it into some online stores, such as Amazon Fresh.  However, for now, your best bet is to look up your current area’s store locator.  Make sure that you click on the store in mind and make sure that it lists the Just Egg as one of products they carry.

While Whole Foods does have some Just products, it does not appear that you can get Just Egg at Whole Foods or Amazon at this time.

How much does Just Egg cost?

When it comes down to something you’d like to see changes on, it’s nothing more than the price of Just Egg.  One 12oz bottle of Just Egg is $7.99 at our local Wegman’s.  That is a lot of money for just one 12 ounce jar.  The hope is that as Just increases production and more and more stores and businesses pick up the product that the cost will go down and eventually rival the same cost as pasteurize raised eggs. (Around $5).

Does Just Egg need to be refrigerated?

Just Egg is located in the refrigerated section and does need to be kept in there when it is not in use.  The product comes with a screw on/off lid and you do not need to use all of it at one time; however, when you are finished, it does need to go back in the refrigerator.

What is the taste and texture of Just Egg like?

The texture of Just Egg is spot on exactly how traditional scrambled eggs would look and feel. It’s soft and almost melts in your mouth.

The taste of Just Egg is unique.  It tastes lightly seasoned and a bit sweet. Not exactly the same as eggs, but when you are thinking about plant based meat/protein based substitutions, Just Egg nailed this product.

It definitely, in our opinion, needs some black pepper (freshly cracked being the preferred way) and also, a tip we learned, it tastes much more “egg” like when you add a bit of black salt to the recipe.  Because of the mild flavor of the Just Egg itself, there is so much you can do with the eggs to help aid them in taking on the flavor of the dish you are creating.

You really need to make your products GMO-free.

We have no control over their ingredients, but I’m sure they would happily take the suggestion on their site!

It does not say on the packaging. However their website says “We use third-party facilities to manufacture our products, so we cannot guarantee that our allergen-free products are made on designated allergen-free lines. However, in order to lower the risk of incidental contact with allergens from other products manufactured in the same facility, we require that our third-party manufacturers employ rigorous sanitation, inspection, and good manufacturing practices. In addition, we include advisory allergen statements (e.g., “May contain soy” or “Made in a facility that processes peanuts and other tree nuts”) for products that may have a heightened risk of allergen incidental contact.”

      Hope this helps!

Is this good to use for baking and replacing eggs? Also, how many “eggs” would one bottle make?

This is not recommended for baking. This is just a scrambled egg replacement. It’s about 8-10 eggs I would say.

How long past the use by date are they safe to cook with?
    Also can they be frozen?

The website says they do not recommend freezing. You’d have to reach out to the company about using past the date on the label.

I tried freezing a bottle, thawed it, and it cooked the same as it did before freezing it.

it does not have meat glue. it has Gellan Gum, which is a vegetarian ingredient and can even be used as a plant-based substitute for gelatin. Further, it has been approved by the USDA for use in organic foods. Vegan, non-GMO, allergen-free, gluten-free, and halal/kosher diet-approved versions of the ingredient are also available.

Before opening, we’d suggest using by the best by date. After opening, the package says use within 7 days

For those of us with Celiacs, watch out-I’ve had a bad ‘gluten’ reaction after eating Just Egg. You never know where the spices come from and so there’s is a reason it’s not labeled gluten free. Remember tumeric, and other spices often use fillers which is may have gluten in them.
Before any article is written about a product being gluten free it’s important to do your research on gluten itself. As a person with a serious autoimmune disease such as Celiacs means gluten free certified products are a must- it’s not an allergy where you can take a Benadryl and feel better it’s a significant autoimmune disorder.
