The Best Vegan Travel Tips
The first few tips are around planning. If you don’t do anything else, always always always plan ahead! This will save you so much time and heartache.
1. Plan Where to Eat Ahead of Time
One of our favorite ways to plan is to look at the Happy Cow app or website. It allows you to search for restaurants in cities and towns all over the world. It will show both completely vegan and restaurants that offer vegan items.
By planning where you can eat during your trip, you will be able to make sure that you always have food on hand.
2. Map Out Grocery Stores
We love to get hotel rooms with a kitchenette because if you’ve been vegan long enough then you know that sometimes it’s just easier making your own food. However, even if you can’t get that, try your best to find a place with a mini fridge and a microwave.
Then, figure out ahead of time where the local grocery stores are. Head there and pick up some easy things like vegan ramen, cereal and non-dairy milk, and more that allows you to eat on your own. If you can find a local Whole Foods, you can usually get some food from the ready-to-eat/buffet areas that you can just reheat.
3. Always Take Snacks
I cannot emphasis this one enough. We always take snacks even if we look on the Happy Cow app and it says that there will be vegan places along the way. Unfortunately, places close, hours changes, and menus definitely change.
It’s horrible pulling into a place only to find out that they actually don’t have any vegan options. Even more so when that place is the only place listed on the Happy Cow app for the next 100 miles.
Luckily, if you always have snacks you are good to go. Things like granola bars, trail mix, and energy bites are great options.
4. Call ahead for Reservations
If you are going on a trip where you have reservations revolving around food, call ahead, multiple times if needed, to ensure that you will have food when you get there. Whether it’s a cruise, plane where meals are served, or conference that lunch is served, you highly recommend doing this or confirming with the event staff that you will have a meal.

5. Look for Ethnic Restaurants
Indian, African, and Asian dishes, for example, often have a lot of options that are naturally vegan or can easily be vegan. If you are having trouble finding dishes that you like, then head to one of these places and ask what is on the menu that can be vegan.
6. Pack Your Food
Whether you are going to one day or a week, try to pack a bag of food that will keep your full and satisfied for the length of time that you are going to be gone.
7. Seek out Vegan Friendly Cities
Unless you are going to visit family, try to seek out places that are vegan friendly. Typically this is bigger cities like Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York City and Chicago have a ton of vegan options. Having so many options at your finger tips is the perfect way to stick to veganism, especially as a new vegan.
8. Socialize!
Find a MeetUp or connect with the city you are going to on Facebook! Doing this allows you to connect with local vegans who know the real deal about the area. They can tell you the best places to go, the places to avoid and the hidden holes in the walls that you’d never consider but will have the absolute best food ever.

Hi! #1 and #3 are essential! I like to look for places ahead of time and learned that vegan restaurants across the country tend to close earlier than other restaurants lol. Taking snacks have saved me multiple times. Thanks for the great tips!

Take your blender if possible. With a grocery store you can always make a filling smoothie at any hotel.

Love all your ideas! Something else I like to do is google “vegan at (name of restaurant)”. If it’s a big chain restaurant someone has figured out their vegan choices already. It has worked great for me. Love your recipes!💜
