Vegan Fried Queso

This vegan fried queso recipe is packed full of flavor and makes an amazing appetizer or snack. Can be deep fried or air fried.

Ingredients

For the Queso

For the Batter

  • 1 cup flour (use GF if needed)
  • ½ cup corn flour
  • 1 - ½ cups water (or unsweetened dairy free milk)
  • 3-4 cups tortilla chips, finely crushed
  • 1 qt vegetable or canola oil (omit if air frying)

Instructions

  • Pour all ingredients for queso into a high powered blender. 
    *See notes if you do not have a blender.
  • Blend for 5 minutes or until a thickened, creamy, well-combined sauce.
  • Line 9x9 pan with parchment paper and pour queso into pan. Freeze for at least 3 hours or overnight.
  • in a large bowl, whisk together flour and corn flour. Whisk in 1 cup of water. You want a thick pancake like batter. If you have more of a dough, add a little more dairy free milk at a time up to an additional ½ cup.
  • In another bowl, add crushed tortilla chips.
  • Remove queso from freezer and cut into squares- 5 rows of 5.
  • Heat oil in a large pot to 350 degrees F.
  • Dip a piece of queso into the wet better, then into the breadcrumbs. Add to the oil.
    *If using air fryer, add to tray or basket. Cook for 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees F. Do not overcrowd.
  • Cook for 1 minute on each side or until golden brown. Remove and place on a paper towel lined rack.
  • Repeat with remaining queso. Do not overcrowd pot.
  • Best eaten with 4 hours.

*If you don't want it as spicy, start with 3 tablespoon of the diced jalapenos and taste test.  Add more to taste.  If you want it really spicy, use a 4oz jar of hot jalapenos instead of mild.
